Lauri was abused by her father and was forced into a hospital for the criminally insane at age 14, to hide the abuse. She moved to Orange County, CA and at 16 was arrested for burglary and placed in juvenile hall. She spent the next two years in more than 16 group and foster homes, abusing drugs and stealing. At 18, Lauri moved to New York and got pregnant; her daughter was taken away two years later. Burns was a known prostitute, addicted to heroin.
At age 23, after being beaten by two gunmen, she decided to turn her life around. Lauri went into detox and graduated from a trade school as a computer networking engineer. After seven years of sobriety, she became a foster mother, eventually fostering 24 highly troubled teens. She started her own computer company, which she still runs, and then began an 11-year career at a Fortune 100 aerospace firm, where she is now IT Program Manager. With $400 in donations, Burns founded The Teen Project, which today has donations of more than $500,000 and many community volunteers. She joined the Orange County Foster Care advisory board and, after being asked to tell her story at more than 200 venues, she wrote PUNISHED FOR PURPOSE. Her story has been detailed in newspapers and on TV and is featured at Oprah.com. Burns has won awards for volunteering with teen inmates, recovery counseling and inspirational speaking for at-risk youth.

Milestones Ranch Malibu where they’ve designed their dual diagnosed residential treatment center in a way that comforts and treats both individuals and their families who have been impacted by substance abuse, alcoholism, dual diagnosis and their related mental health issues. Dual diagnosis, also referred to as co-occurring disorders, refers to people who have a psychological or behavioral pattern that occurs and is thought to cause distress or disability that is not expected as in a substance abuse problem. This is a common diagnosis because many people with psychological disorders go undiagnosed and self-medicate with illegal substances, while others develop mental challenges after years of drug abuse.

A behavioral research team announced last January that it doubled the recovery rate for drug addicts in a study that gave patients feedback on their brain’s electrical activity in conjunction with conventional treatment for drug abuse. Across the country, drug rehab programs have generally achieved a success rate of 20 to 30 percent in relapse prevention one to two years following treatment.
